The Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, TN youth group (named The Ridge) formed a praise band to play for their Wednesday night Bible studies. At first they were just simply known as the youth praise band. When they began thinking up a band name, they would sit for hours and come up with some of the stupidest names imaginable. One name for instance was "Big Foam Finger." But nothing seemed to stick. Then they decided to go with Guy Wire.
They were thinking, we are not the best sounding band in the world. We are not professional instrumentalist and we are not professional singers, but we still want to praise God. We want all the attention to be on Him and not on the band. They began to parallel the band to a radio tower. You can see a radio tower from miles away pointing straight and tall into the heavens, but what you can't see are these tiny little guy wires that are holding that tower up and keep it pointing straight up.
We want to be like those guy wires that keep the towers pointing to heaven. We want to keep our audience pointing to God and not looking at us. God should be the object of their worship, not a band or a worship leader, which people so often do. Guy Wire may never be the best sounding band but as long and they keep people focused on God and worshipping Him, then God will be pleased.
